The First Post (in which the author introduces himself and admits to his problem)

Hi. My name is Idle Pete and I’m a digressionist…

I know there is no such word. But hear me out…For as long as I can remember I’ve had this problem. I’ve been supposed to focus on one particular area, one fragment of knowledge, but before I know it my mind has disappeared off over the hill into some completely different subject. I stop, look around and think “How the hell did I get here??” I know the point from which I started and I know where I’ve ended up, but as for how I got from A to B…

This has caused major difficulties in my life. Modern life is so specialized. If you have half a brain you are supposed to find a subject you’re interested and become an expert in that ONE field. If something else catches your eye you are supposed to ignore it: a short dalliance with that glinting unrelated subject can slow (or even stop) you from reaching that one goal. But is life really like that? Should we really be chasing after one goal and then when we’ve reached it move onto the next? Should we just eat one food at a time?

This problem of mine has led to the few previous blogs I’ve started petering out to silence. Something has caught my eye that leads me onto something else and before I know it I’m over the hills and far away and I don’t want to go back. So this time I’m going to concentrate on what I am always interested in: digressions. I’m a wanderer, always have been, why deny it? These posts could go anywhere and one will not follow on from another. I’ll basically just be blogging on anything that I’ve stumbled upon. I’m sure many people will know more about every subject I write about, but being an expert isn’t the point. Take these little digressions and mix them with what you know, see where you end up: get lost.

So, my name is Idle Pete and I’m a digressionist. You got five minutes…?
